Food for Babe's Thoughts

A year ago, Joel Locaylocay Photography invited food blogger, Justinne Go, for a portrait shoot. Justinne majors in Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of San Carlos and happened to be one of the former students of my good friend, Ising.

The shoot centered on making a head shot of Justinne, surrounded with real cupcakes and marshmallows. I was asked to make a box that would hold these pastries. The real kicker was Justinne's head would be at the center.

I found a box for a large cake at Caro and Marie at Mango Avenue. Using only the bottom, I drew an ellipse that best represents the measurements of Justinne's head, including the forehead, the nose, and jaw areas. Using a cutter, I re-traced the ellipse to make a hole. Scotch tape also kept the edges from fraying.

Where the head will be fitted

Turning the box upside down, I glued some rectangular cutouts from illustration board, as dividers. I also strengthen the edges of the box using the same cutouts. Next, paper cupcake trays were glued on top of these dividers, covering all available space. The trays held the cupcakes during the shoot, keeping them from toppling.

The overall result looked like this:

Since the construction wasn't photogenic, it was cloaked with a black fabric. A hole, same with the one on the board, was made at the center of the rectangular black fabric. It was then glued around the head area and the rest of the fabric draped around the construction. This also protected Justinne's skin from any abrasions, while encased.

On the day of the shoot, Justinne expressed apprehensions upon seeing the box. She felt like she is going to be enclosed inside a coffin. However, these thoughts were dispelled by the aroma of the delicious red velvet cupcake (which she herself baked) and marshmallows. With each click of the shutter, no one will ever mistake the delight in her eyes.

  1. Great DYI instructional, ms.! Thank you so much for your ingenious artwork. Haha. It was so thrilling and fun, the entire process of the shoot. From getting my face measured (which was pretty awkward but whatever) to the actual shoot. Hope to see more of your work! :D

Thanks a lot for plugging in my blog as well!
